Dead Hearts and Empty Supplications – Sayings of the Salaf

It is reported that Ibrâhîm b. Adham (d162H) – Allâh have mercy on him – once passed through the market of Basrah. People gathered around him and asked:

O Abû Ishâq, Allâh the Exalted says in his Book. ‘Call on me, I will answer your prayers’, but we have been calling on Him for a long time and He does not answer our prayers.

[Ibrâhîm] replied, “O people of Basrah, your hearts have died in respect to ten things:

First, you know Allâh but you do not give Him His rights;

Second, you have read Allâh’s Book but you do not act by it;

Third, you claim to love Allâh’s Messenger – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – yet you abandon his Sunnah;

Fourth, you claim to be enemies to Shaytân but you conform to [his ways];

Fifth, you say you love Paradise yet you do not work for it;

Sixth, you say you fear The Fire yet you put yourselves closer to it [by sinning];

Seventh, you say death is true but you do not prepare for it;

Eighth, you busy yourselves with the faults of others and disregard your own;

Ninth, you consume the favors of your Lord but are not grateful for them; and

Tenth, you bury your dead but take no lesson from them.”

Abû Nu’aym, Hilyah Al-Awliyâ’ 8: 15, 16.

imaan-sabr

Alhamdulillah.

s-a-b-r

It’s a beautiful word, indeed. In short, it can be translated to:

All praises due to God

And in shorter:

Thank God.

But it is so much more than that. Arabic is such a dense language that cannot be directly translated into English. Arabic, more so Qur’anic Arabic, has incredibly intellectual language that can only be deciphered by those who have studied countless hours, days, months, and years to get down to the nitty-gritty of even just one word, such as alhamdulillah.

Hamd is praise in Arabic.
However, it is more than that of shukr — a simple way of giving thanks. Shukr is expressed as a response to a favor; whereas, hamd is expressed as both a response to a favor and as a spontaneous action of dhikr.

Scholars believe that there are three ways that we, His servants, thank God:

  1. With the tongue: praising the Bestower of Blessings
  2. With the limbs: acting in obedience to Him and abandoning disobedience (i.e. sins)
  3. With the heart: recognising the magnitude of the blessing and knowing that it has been given by the Grace of God and not by the servant’s own merit.

When the word hamd is preceded by the definite article, al, this is to include ALL the different manners of praise and specify them to Him. The word is further expressed in the hadith in which the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, said:

O, Allah! To You belongs all praise and thanks in its entirety; to You belongs the dominion in its entirety; in Your hand is all goodness in its entirety and to You returns the affair in its entirety.
[’Ibn Abi ad-Dunya, Sa’ad ‘ibn Abi Waqqas, Abu Sa’id al-Khurdi]

Therefore, by saying alhamdulillah, the servant is praising and thank God alone due to His greatness, unity, perfection, His Beautiful Names and Attributes, and His innumerable favors and blessings that none can encompass save He.

Acting upon Surat al-Fatihah

Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him) asks us if we are truly acting upon what is contained in Surat al-Fatihah. Extracts from a lesson in Imam al-Muhasibi’s book,Adab al-Nufus in Dar al-Mustafa on 12th Jumad al-Akhirah 1434 /22nd April 2013.

What is your state in relation to In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful? Do you do anything in other than His name? Do you forget His divinity and His mercy?

What is your state in relation to All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds? Do you perceive blessings as coming from other than Him? Do you forget His bounty upon you? Do you praise Him as He is worthy of being praised? Do you witness that He has Lordship over all of the Worlds? Or are you deceived by some created thing? In this you are being tested.

You are being tested by the verse: The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Are you conscious of His mercy which encompasses you? Have you shown mercy to His slaves for His sake? Have you shown them mercy or animosity? Do you want good for them or evil?

You are being tested by the verse: Master of the Day of Recompense. Do you have complete certainty in the Day of Recompense? Have you prepared for it or not? Are you thinking about it or have you forgotten about it?

You are being tested by: You alone we worship. Do you find tranquility in worshipping Him? Do you know that worship is the purpose of your existence and creation? Have you given worship its due? Do you love it? Have you perfected it? Have you studied the rulings pertaining to it?

From You alone do we seek aid. Do you truly rely upon Him or have you been deceived by the means? Do you seek aid from your intellect, your ideas and from people while forgetting the One Whose aid you truly seek? If He causes someone to receive assistance from you, do you see it as coming from you or coming from Him?

You are being tested by the verse: Show us the Straight Path: have you been truthful in seeking this guidance? Have you expended your efforts in attaining it? Do you know the features of the Straight Path? Have you done your utmost to remain firm upon it or not?

The Path of those whom You have blessed: do you know their station? Do you love them? Have you taken them as allies? Have you tried to emulate them? Or does your state or the state of your family or children resemble the state of their enemies?

Not those upon whom is the wrath [of Allah], nor those who are astray. Do you resemble any of them? Do you believe any of the things they say which go against the way of your Lord? Are you fearful of being resurrected with them? If you are fearful, have you acted accordingly? You are being tested in this.

Ramadan Check Up

poeticislam

For those who are finding that their faith and actions are not really what they wanted them to be so far during Ramadan. For those who are doing well, or think they’re doing well. For every single person observing Ramadan this month, young or old, first timer or experienced.

As you know, this month is a valuable chance to get closer to Allah  سبحانه و تعالى, but what good are acts of worship when this intention is not present?

Did you know, that for every good deed you sincerely intend to do for the sake of Allah  سبحانه و تعالى, you are rewarded with a full good deed. If you then actually perform this good deed, you are rewarded with 10-700 times that good deed ‘or many times over’.

”Allah has written down the good deeds and the bad ones.” Then, he explained it [by saying that]: ”He who has intended a good deed and has not done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as from ten good deeds to seven hundred times, or many times over. But if he has intended a bad deed and has not done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed.” (related by Bukhari and Muslim)

Subhan'Allah, so evaluate yourself! Have you been doing enough? If not, then intend to do all the good deeds you can possibly think of. Intend and believe that you will actually achieve what you wish. What have you got to lose?! As long as you are sincere you will be rewarded. So if you’re able to, grab a piece of paper and write down at least four deeds you intend to do, and you must have one that fits each of these categories:

  1. An act of physical ‘ibadah (worship) (e.g. extra prayers, du'aa, fasting, giving to charity…)
  2. A sin you are committing which you will remove from your daily life (e.g. major/minor sins, lying, cheating, disobedience to parents…)
  3. Something that is helpful to those around you (e.g. can be in the home or on a larger scale, bettering your character, giving to charity, being kind to neighbours…) and
  4. Improving an act of worship that you are already performing (e.g. improving your daily Salah, if you make lots of du'a-use specific ones and learn more or renew your intentions for giving to charity etc…)

Don’t be pessimistic when looking at these lists, you are more capable then you think! So many of us complain about how they cannot wake up for fajr, or that it’s hard for them to fast, or even that they cannot control their tongues and they get angry easily-but this is the beauty of Ramadan-when it arrives, the same people wake up every day, they fast daily and when provoked to argue, they say 'I am fasting’, the key is to well and truly implement good habits into your life permanently.

By making the intention to do these four deeds during Ramadan, insha'Allah not only will you be rewarded, but when performing these deeds you will get used to them and will come out of Ramadan as a better and more cultivated Muslim.

This is a reminder to myself first and foremost.

May Allah  سبحانه و تعالى make things easy for us all!
